‘A Great Moment’: Rover Finds Clue That Mars May Harbor Life

A year after reporting that NASA’s
Curiosity rover had found no evidence
of methane gas on Mars , all but
dashing hopes that organisms might
be living there now, scientists
reversed themselves on Tuesday.
Curiosity has now recorded a burst of
methane that lasted at least two
months.
For now, scientists have just two
possible explanations for the methane.
One is that it is the waste product of
certain living microbes
The scientists also reported that for
the first time, they had confirmed the
presence of carbon-based organic
molecules in a rock sample. The so-
called organics are not direct signs of
life, past or present, but they lend
weight to the possibility that Mars had
the ingredients required for life, and
may even still have them.
“This is really a great moment for the
mission,” Dr. Grotzinger told a news
conference here at the fall meeting of
the American Geophysical Union.
The presence of methane is significant
because the gas cannot exist for long.
Calculations indicate that sunlight and
chemical reactions in the Martian
atmosphere would break up the
molecules within a few hundred years,
so any methane there now must have
been created recently.
It could have been created by a
geological process known as
serpentinization, which requires both
heat and liquid water. Or it could be a
product of life in the form of microbes
known as methanogens, which release
methane as a waste product.
Even if the explanation for the
methane turns out to be geological, the
hydrothermal systems would still be
prime locations to search for signs of
life.
Scientists have always expected that
some tiny amount of methane would
be found on Mars. Cosmic dust falling
on the planet contains organic
compounds that are broken up by
ultraviolet light from the sun,
producing methane.
But the new findings, which are
described in detail in a paper this
week in the journal Science, are a 180-
degree flip from a year ago, when
mission scientists said that Curiosity
had found no signs of methane,
placing an upper limit of 1.3 parts per
billion by volume.
Since then, the scientists refined their
measurements, detecting a
background level of 0.7 parts per
billion. That is half of what was
predicted, raising another mystery
that somehow methane is also being
destroyed.
But in November 2013, two months
after the scientists reported the
absence of methane on Mars, the
rover measured methane levels 10
times as high. “It was an ‘oh my gosh’
moment,” said Christopher R. Webster
of the NASA Jet Propulsion
Laboratory, the lead author of the
Science paper.
The methane levels stayed high
through at least the end of January.
They subsequently fell, to less than
one part per billion.
An earlier measurement in July had
also been high, although it dropped by
half a week later, and the margin of
error made it unclear what was going
on. Curiosity made no methane
measurements between July and
November 2013.
Sushil K. Atreya of the University of
Michigan, a member of the science
team, said it was possible that elevated
methane levels lasted from July
through January. “It could have been
over six months,” he said, “but we
don’t know that.”
Given its quick appearance and quick
disappearance, the newly discovered
methane was a relatively small burst,
mission scientists suspect.
A decade ago, three teams of scientists
reported that they had detected
methane in the Martian atmosphere —
two using observations from Earth ,
one using the European Space
Agency’s Mars Express orbiter.
All of the measurements were at the
edge of the instruments’ capabilities,
and the methane appeared to
disappear two years later. If true, that
meant not only that was something
creating methane on Mars, but also
that something else was quickly
destroying it.
Many Mars scientists decided that a
simpler solution to the methane
mystery was that the measurements
were mistaken, a conclusion bolstered
by the absence reported by the
Curiosity team last year.
Now, Dr. Grotzinger said, “It’s back on
the table.”
Michael J. Mumma of NASA’s Goddard
Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.,
who led one of the teams that reported
much larger methane plumes in the
Mars atmosphere in 2003 based on
measurements from Earth — and has
found no methane since 2005 — said
the new data was “pleasant” after
years of doubts from critics.
The new Curiosity measurements
“confirmed this startling reality that
methane is being released,
sporadically, and it is being destroyed
quickly,” he said. “Both events are
surprising.”
As for the organic molecules, they
showed up in a mudstone nicknamed
Cumberland that Curiosity drilled in
May 2013.
Within Curiosity is a miniature
chemistry laboratory that detected
significant amounts of the organic
molecule chlorobenzene, in much
higher concentrations than had been
seen in other rocks it had examined.
Scientists spent months analyzing
whether the organic compounds came
from Cumberland or contamination
Curiosity had brought from Earth.
“You don’t want to be faked out,” Dr.
Grotzinger said.
The scientists are still unsure whether
Cumberland contained chlorobenzene,
which is not a naturally occurring
compound on Earth, or if that was the
end product of chemical reactions
involving other organic molecules in
the rock as it was heated. But they
convinced themselves that the organic
carbon is Martian.
“In part, Curiosity was built to explore
for organics,” Dr. Grotzinger said,
“and we found them.”

You won’t believe what was recently found in Egypt. What’s scary is how it got there…. - Amazing...

#1 An Ancient Egyptian city named
Heracleion or Thonis was unexpectedly
discovered near Egypt’s modern coastline.
It was a surprising discovery as the city
was dismissed as a legend or folklore.
The significance of Heracleion has been
demonstrated by the finding of 64 ships, which
is the biggest numberof ancient vessels ever
found in one spot. In addition to these ships, 700
anchors were found on the sea floor!
Among the other antiques found at the
archaeological site, following are the
photographs of a notable few:

Buhari to announce running mate today

After more than 48 hours of consultations, the All Progressives Congress appears to have reached a decision on the choice of the running mate for the party’s presidential candidate, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd).

However, the party’s leadership is keeping the identity of the preferred candidate under wraps.

But the party’s national chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, while speaking to journalists at the party’s headquarters in Abuja, on Tuesday, hinted that Buhari would announce the party’s choice today (Wednesday).

He was responding to media inquiries about the delay in the choice of a running mate for Buhari.

Odigie-Oyegun, who stepped out of the NWC meeting to address members of the Jigawa State chapter of the party, denied the charge that the choice of the running mate was being delayed.

He said, “It’s not delayed, the candidate will speak to you people, I have a feeling he will speak to you tomorrow (today). The party has consulted with the candidate and we have reached some agreement and he will address you on it tomorrow.”

The NWC meeting which started at about 1pm ended at about 8.12pm.

Apart from Odigie-Oyegun, none of the party leaders who came out of the meeting agreed to speak with the media.

Those in contention for the top job are: Prof. Yemi Osibajo, Governors Rotimi Amaechi, Adams Oshiomole and Babatunde Fashola.

Others in the race are the immediate past Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi; a former Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly, Olorunnimbe Mamora; a former Governor of Osun State, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola; and former Ekiti State Governor, Otunba Adeniyi Adebayo.

However, Osibajo appears to be the most favoured because of his religious background, the fact that he like Buhari has a clean record of public service and his closeness to the party leader, Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu.

The party is expected to submit the particulars of its candidates to the Independent National Electoral Commission, unfailingly on Thursday.

According to the election time table released by INEC, prospective candidates for the Presidency and National Assembly in the 2015 general elections must submit forms CF001 and CF002 at the INEC Headquarters in Abuja on or before that day.

This is in line with Section 31(c) of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended) which provides for not later than 60 days before election

Prominent Yoruba leaders, who are non partisan, have urged the party to ensure that a credible personality picked the vice-presidential candidate ticket.

Some of the leaders, who included a retired soldier and a renowned academic, commended the party’s leadership for the transparent way the presidential candidate emerged.

A power bloc within the party is rooting for a South-West personality to emerge as the vice-presidential candidate.

The bloc contended that top positions such as the presidential ticket and the national chairmanship of the party had been conceded to the North and South-South regions of the country.

Specifically, the bloc explained that the Congress for Progressive Change – one of the three parties that merged to form the APC – produced Buhari, while the All Nigeria Peoples Party, a party in the merger, produced the national chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun.

It said the vice-presidential ticket should be conceded to the Action Congress of Nigeria, which is the third party in the merger.

An APC governor said the choice of the vice-presidential “is more complex than as it is being seen because many interests are involved.”

The governor, who said “we are at a very critical stage of the process,” added that a credible candidate would emerge at the end of the rigorous exercise.

It was gathered that many of the leaders of the party, who had booked flights to Lagos, had to cancel their bookings when the vice-presidential candidate did not emerge as expected on Tuesday.

Henry retires from football

Thierry Henry has announced his retirement from football and will return to London to take up a role in the media.

The 37-year-old former Arsenal striker left the New York Red Bulls at the start of the month after they were knocked out of the MLS play-offs, but there was speculation he might choose to play on at another club – with a return to the Gunners mooted.

However, the former France international and FIFA World Cup™-winner has instead called time on a trophy-laden career which included spells with Monaco, Juventus, Arsenal, Barcelona and the Red Bulls.

In a statement released to Press Association Sport, Henry said, “After 20 years in the game I have decided to retire from professional football. It has been an incredible journey and I would like to thank all the fans, team mates and individuals involved with AS Monaco, Juventus, Arsenal FC, FC Barcelona, the New York Red Bulls and of course the French National Team that have made my time in the game so special.

“It is now time for a different career path and I am pleased to say that I will be returning to London and joining Sky Sports. I will hopefully share some of the insights, observations and experiences I have learnt over the years with you guys.

“I have had some amazing memories (mostly good!) and a wonderful experience. I hope you have enjoyed watching as much as I have enjoyed taking part. See you on the other side…”

Goal-laden career

Henry will always be most closely associated with Arsenal, where he is the all-time goalscorer with 228 goals in 377 games across two different spells.

Arsene Wenger, who had known him as a young player at Monaco, signed him from Juventus for £11million in 1999, and immediately shifted him from the wing to a central striking position.

His blend of pace and power made him one of the most feared forwards in English football, and Henry won the Premier League title twice with the Gunners, as well as the FA Cup three times.

Henry left Arsenal in 2007 and joined Barcelona, where he won the UEFA Champions League in 2009. He also added two La Liga titles, the Copa del Rey, Spanish Supercopa, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup to his honours list in three seasons at the Nou Camp.

His medal collection also includes a Ligue 1 title and Trophee des Champions with Monaco, his first professional club.

He spent the final five years of his playing career with the Red Bulls, returning to Arsenal to make four appearances on loan in early 2012.

With France, Henry scored 51 goals in 123 appearances – only Lilian Thuram has more caps with Les Bleus. He was a member of the 1998 World Cup winning squad, while also being a runner up in 2006. Henry was a European champion in 2000 and was part of the team that won the FIFA Confederations Cup in 2003.

Fayose presents N80.774bn budget to 7 PDP lawmakers

19 APC members absent as party disapproves presentation
*Tell your runaway lawmakers to return, Fayose tells APC
I’ll never leave PDP, says Ebonyi Dep Gov
By Leke Adeseri, South West Regional Editor & Gbenga Ariyibi
Ado Ekiti—Ekiti State  Governor, Mr Ayo Fayose has presented N80.774 billion  budget estimate to seven Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, members of the House of Assembly  for the 2015 fiscal year.
However, the Chamber was parked full of non-legislators.
Christened “budget of reality” yesterday’s presentation represents 77.7 per cent of the 2014 budget of N103.8 billion by  the immediate past Governor of the state,Dr Kayode Fayemi.
During yesterday’s budget presentation which took place at the floor of the state House of Assembly, members of the All Progressives Congress, APC, lawmakers  were absent.
The assembly’s gallery was, however, filled up to the brim as politicians, traditional rulers and captains of industries were in attendance.
Fayose on the occasion said the state government decided to reduce the budget to a more pragmatic and realistic one that would bring possible results to the people of the state.
Ekiti APC disapproves the presentation
Meantime, the All Progressives Congress, APC, in  the state has condemned the attitude of the Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, for presenting the 2015 Budget to seven of the 26-member of the House of Assembly in less than 20 minutes.
According to Ekiti State Publicity Secretary of the APC, Taiwo Olatunbosun, the manner of the presentation of the budget by the Governor was constitutional breach, illegal and absurd.
The APC  therefore counselled the governor to follow legal steps in the governance and financial management of the state.
‘’Seven members of PDP in the Assembly had earlier sat to illegally confirm commissioner-nominees and approve the dissolution and reconstitution of the local governments, among others.
‘’Monday’s illegal sitting with a full house of thugs was a new dimension to the constitutional breaches and lawlessness by the Executive.
“We never knew that Ekiti people could be brought to this low record in decency and respect for the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria by herding thugs to the House of Assembly to join seven members to present state budget.
“The standard practice is for the governor to present the state budget to members in full session while the public sit at the gallery to watch proceedings. But in this instance, thugs intermingled with the lawmakers in a plenary in such a way that you cannot differentiate a lawmaker from a thug,” Olatunbosun said.
‘’The APC spokesman further criticized the barring of journalists, including the in-house correspondents, from covering the event, even as he berated the governor for rallying reporters to the Assembly after presenting the budget at the illegal sitting for a press briefing. He asked journalists to be professional in their duties to save democracy.
Olatunbosun’s words: “What is the use of calling reporters you intentionally barred from covering the main budget presentation to a post-budget presentation briefing if not to cover up the thugs that sat with the seven members to conduct that illegal sitting? This is time for activism in journalism. Reporters must begin to ask questions on the abnormality and breaches of the Constitution in governance process.”
To this end, Olatunbosun called the attention of Nigerians and lovers of democracy around the world to the reign of impunity in Ekiti State. He urged all organs and agencies of government responsible for budget processing not to get themselves involved in any financial transactions based on the “illegal budget”, saying all actions on the budget and transactions involving the features of the budget are illegal until it is legally presented to a legally constituted House of Assembly composed of 19 members of APC and their seven colleagues in PDP.
In like manner, he urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC and Independent Corrupt Practices Commission, ICPC,  to beam their lights on government financial transactions in Ekiti State in the face of mindless plot to defraud Ekiti people through illegal conduct in the financial management of public funds.
Tell your runaway lawmakers to return, Fayose tells APC
In a swift reaction, Governor Ayodele Fayose has told the All APC in the State to bring back the party’s runaway lawmakers to the State, saying; “No individual, group or political party can hold the State to ransom.”
Reacting to the party’s condemnation of Governor Fayose’s presentation of the 2015 Budget to the House of Assembly, Special Assistant to the Governor on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka said: “It is shameful and wicked for the APC and its leaders to think that they can hold the entire people of Ekiti down just because they lost power.”
Olayinka, who warned the APC lawmakers of the consequences of losing their seats should they continue to abdicate their legislative duties, added that; “by the rule of the House of Assembly, each member must attend the House sittings for 181 days in a year.”
He said the sitting of the House in which the 2015 Budget was presented was lawful.
“The court of law is there for the loud-mouth in the APC to approach if they have any genuine complain to make.
“Today is December 15 (yesterday) and the APC lawmakers know that 2015 Budget must be presented as provided by the 1999 Constitution. Yet, some of the APC lawmakers refused to report in the House of Assembly, except three of them, who are interested in the progress and development of the State.”

South African wins Miss World 2014 in London

Miss South Africa, 22-year-old Rolene Strauss, was crowned Miss World 2014 at the contest’s glitzy final in London on Sunday, with an estimated billion viewers watching on television around the globe.
Miss Hungary, Edina Kulcsar, was judged the runner-up and Miss United States, Elizabeth Safrit, came third in the 64th annual competition, contested by women from 121 countries.

Miss South Africa, 22-year-old Rolene Strauss

Medical student Strauss clasped her hands together in surprise and was crowned by the outgoing Miss World, Megan Young of the Philippines, to huge cheers in the ExCeL exhibition centre.
“South Africa this is for you,” Strauss said. “I think I will brace myself for what’s about to happen. It’s a huge responsibility.”
She told AFP she wanted to help spread education in her homeland and thereby help other people realise their dreams.
“I am what I am today because of the opportunities I have received and I would love to give others the same opportunities; educating, the opportunity to be educated, to make healthy choices and also to live their dreams,” Strauss said.
And she was already getting used to the glittering crown.
“I’ll definitely keep it on as long as I can but my parents are staying around here so they’ll be hugging me and I’m afraid that it might fall off,” she said.
This year’s event has been rocked by the murder of Miss Honduras, 19-year-old Maria Jose Alvarado, who was shot dead along with her sister last month.
Police in Honduras accuse her sister’s boyfriend of shooting them after seeing his partner dancing with another man at a party.
– Shimmering costumes –
Strauss and other contestants will travel to the crime-plagued central American nation to build a school named in the sisters’ honour.
“We hope that it will really start to impress on the people in Honduras that the violence, and hurting people like those two innocent women… maybe they can think again before they take a gun,” Miss World chairwoman Julia Morley told AFP.
Sunday’s show started with a spectacular choreographed dance routine, with all the beauty queens on stage in costumes inspired by their homelands — including Miss Bolivia in a colourful feathered headdress.
While beauty remains central to the event, the women taking part are chiefly judged on their talents and involvement in good causes.
Miss Malaysia won the talent competition in a live sing-off with Miss Scotland.
In the Beauty with a Purpose section — the heart of Miss World — contestants present a charitable project they have been working on in their homeland.
In this section, the judges gave equal first place to Misses Brazil, Guyana, India, Indonesia and Kenya, unable to separate them.
In rounds held since the contestants arrived in London, Miss Finland topped the sporting competition; Miss United States was the multimedia winner; Miss Bosnia and Hercegovina won the top model round and Miss Sweden triumphed in beach fashion.
– Bollywood star honoured –
The event also featured a special 20-year award for 1994’s Miss World, Bollywood star Aishwarya Rai.
The 41-year-old Indian actress appeared on stage with her film star husband Abhishek Bachchan, their daughter Aaradhya and her mother.
The prize was for the “Dhoom 2″ star’s charitable work with children with cleft palates since being made famous by Miss World.
“I stand here overwhelmed by this honour,” she said.
The 10 contestants who topped the final scoreboard were, in descending order, from India, South Africa, England, Guyana, Brazil, Hungary, Kenya, United States, Mexico and Australia.
They were joined by Miss Thailand, who won the people’s choice award, voted for by people around the world through a mobile phone app.
The judges chose Miss Hungary, Miss Australia, Miss South Africa, Miss United States and Miss England as their top five before picking their top three.
Miss World began in 1951, a year before its chief rival Miss Universe.
Strauss is the third South African Miss World, the country having held the title in 1958 and 1974.
Venezuela tops the all-time leader board with six titles, ahead of India and the United Kingdom on five titles each

Buhari rekindles hope from Lagos

Teslim Balogun Stadium, venue of the just concluded National convention of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Surelere, Lagos State wore a new look outside being a beehive of activities.
More interesting also was the superb security that prevailed due to massive deployment of security operatives from both the police and the Department of State Services, DSS throughout the two-day event that held between December 10 and 11. Lighting was also adequate to illuminate the inside and outside of the stadium.
By 4pm on Wednesday, the first day, accreditation of party delegates, journalists and other stakeholders at the epochal event had already gotten underway.
This took place outside the main bowl of the stadium where party officials had stationed the individual booths of the respective states. And so, with the name of each state boldly inscribed on the booth, identification and accreditation were made easy.

•Imo State governor, Rochas Okorocha; Sam Nda-Isaiah, APC National Chairman, Chief Odigie Oyegun; General Mohammdu Buhari; Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and an unidentified party official after the emergency of Buhari as the flagbearer of the party.
Meanwhile, at the second and main gates of the stadium were a horde of security details who mounted sentry. Thorough electronic-aided search was also conducted at the port of entry. This warded off hoodlums and interlopers who had no business within and around the venue.
Inside, the stadium was well decorated to reflect the day. Flags and banners of the party were hoisted and spread very conspicuously to adorn the environment. Every state of the federation had a stand. Party leaders, senators, members of the House of Representatives had their place also. Of course, the place of the media stood out. At the center of the stadium was an erected platform which served as the podium for the various speakers. A red rug was also spread from the VIP stand to the center just as electronic projectors.
Electronic projectors
From within the centre of the pitch came some scintillating tunes that kept the place going that though the programme had not started as at 10 pm, that everyone had their fill.
While the wait lasted, two popular artists turned politicians, Tony One Week and Desmond Elliot were on stage entertaining the audience amid introduction of dignitaries. Tony Tetuila and Seyilaw were also hand and joined the duo.
Excited by the orderly coordination of the process, a member of the Board of Trustees of the party and Presidential Screening Committee, Dr. Sam Sam Jaja poured encomiums on the convention planning committee headed by the immediate past governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi.
The event finally came on stream at about 9:30 p.m. when former broadcaster turned lawmaker, Abike Dabiri-Erewa who was the official Master of Ceremony, MC, mounted the podium, calling for the singing of the Nigerian national anthem. This was followed by Christians and Islamic prayers.
This was followed by an avalanche of speeches. Among those who spoke were the host governor, Mr. Babatunde Fasola, the national chairman of the party, Mr. John Odigie-Oyegun, chairman of the Presidential Screening Committee, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, Speaker Aminu Tambuwal of the House of Representatives, the national leader of APC and former governor of Lagos state, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, and two party chieftains, Chief Audu Ogbe and Senator Danjuma Goje among others.
Presidential ticket
The five contestants for the presidential ticket, Gen. Mohammadu Buhari, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, governors of Kano and Imo States, Dr. Rabiu Kwankwaso and Chief Rochas Okorocha, and the publisher of Leadership Newspaper, Sam Nda-Isaiah also had an opportunity to present their ideas to the delegates before the voting process was flagged off.One of the highlights of the convention was the unveiling of APC manifesto.
This happened before the commencement of actual voting. But the voting which commenced few minutes past two o’clock in the early morning of Thursday was disrupted two hours after by Delta State delegates who demanded that they must be allowed to cast their vote inspite of the missing verification cards.
The protest resulted into a free for all between Delta State delegates and some electoral officials.
The verification card had on it, name of each delegate from each state. And it also served as delegates voters card.
The protesting delegates smashed chairs and some voting materials, even as they chanted “No more voting. Until we are allowed to vote.” They especially targeted the alternate convention secretary, Dr. Alex Ideh, remarkably from Delta State who some claimed was the cause of their disfranchisement.
It took the intervention of the APC chairman, Chief Oyegun to restore normalcy at the scene about an hour after the crisis emanated.
But the matter was later resolved as voting continued. Voting ended at about 5 am, setting the stage for sorting of thumb-printed ballot papers and counting. This lasted until about some minutes to 6 pm on Thursday when General Mohammadu Buhari was declared winner of the exercise by polling 3,340 votes.
In his acceptance speech, Buhari said:“I ask that you join this effort, not for me, but to establish a better land for all of us. I understand and accept the hard challenge ahead. When all is said and done, let it be written that Muhammadu Buhari gave his all for this nation.

APC senatorial aspirant rejects result of primaries in Ogun East

An All Progressives Congress, APC, senatorial aspirant in Ogun East, Otunba Oluseyi Oduntan, has rejected the result of last week ‘s primaries at the Ijebu-Ode township Stadium, alleging rigging, manipulations and multiple voting.
Already, Oduntan, has petitioned both the state and the national secretariat of the party, claiming that the election was characterised by massive rigging, intimidation, coercion and manipulation.
Otunba Tai Bela, an ally of Oduntan, who was a member of the House of Representatives in a chat with Vanguard, confirmed the development, saying that Oduntan had forwarded a petition to the party secretariat.
Bela stated, “There was nothing free or fair about the primary election. It was such a disgraceful primary in Ogun East Senatorial district. How can we have an election on the auspices of the APC conducted in such a shameful manner?
There was nothing progressive about it. Government officials, including Commissioners, Chairmen of Local Governments, party Chairmen, state party executives, government liaison officers, among others, intimidated, and coerced delegates like sheep and personally wrote ballot papers.
We challenged them and they said they were acting on ‘instructions and orders from above’. It is unfortunate that the government decided to act in this manner.
“There was no primary election, but a thoroughly teleguided arrangement towards a predetermined outcome, because they knew that Seyi Oduntan was going to win landslide. I personally saw serving commissioners, council chairmen, policemen and government officials writing on ballot papers several times. When we spoke to them, they said it was ‘order from above’. The election was a sham. Our people, particularly the Ijebu people, have protested and promised that there would be a backlash at the general election. The perfidious action of the government against thousands of faithful party members shall receive its just rewards in the coming election.”

Canada 2015 Women W/Cup: We ‘ll shock the world, says Falcons coach

Coach Edwin Okon believes Nigeria can “shock the world” in the so-called ‘Group of Death’ at the 2015 women’s World Cup in Canada.
The African champions are drawn against two-time world champions, the United States, in Group D alongside Australia and fifth ranked Sweden, who conceded just one goal in 10 qualifying matches.
“We qualified as African champions and that should worry the other teams in our group,” Okon said.
Nigeria is the only African team to have played in all Fifa Women’s World Cup tournaments since 1991 but they have never gone past the quarter-final stage, a feat they achieved at the 1999 edition.
Okon believes the side he now has at his disposal is better equipped than in previous years to handle the threat in their group and provide a challenge of their own at the showpiece event to be played from 6 June to 5 July. “We have a young squad with strong mentality and our opponents definitely respect us because we are not under pressure.” he said.
“Our ambition is to surpass the quarter-final stage of 1999 and my players are well aware that the pressure is on the supposed big teams to deliver.
“Our squad is very strong, boasts of players who have played on a big stage, they fight for a common cause – and I think this mentality is important to us.
“If we play our game, stay focused and with God on our side we will shock the world.”
Okon was appointed coach of the senior women’s side after leading Nigeria’s U-20 team to a fourth place finish at the U-20 World Cup in Japan in 2012.

i do nasty music and i live off it

Popular indigenous rapper, Remilekun Safaru known as Reminisce  has come out to declare that though people term his indigenous rap music as foul and disgusting music, but he is getting rich off it.

*Reminisce
“I don’t think anyone has given indigenous rappers any chance, we took it by ourselves. We just decided among ourselves that we need to make people know what we have to offer. Indigenous rappers own the crowd. Let’s be very honest with ourselves, how many people can speak good English in this country? It’s about the audience affiliating with the artistes who speak their language. It’s not about calling indigenous rappers razz and local. More people want to be razz now; they think razz is the new cool. Luckily for me, I am selling razz music and I am getting rich off it. “
The Alaga Ibile star also said that his voice is what sets him apart from every rapper. “I think it’s my voice that makes me different from any other rapper. My voice is my strong point, nobody sounds like me”

Former Super Eagles coach Christian Chukwu has told Stephen Keshi not to bother trying to retain the Nigerian national team coaching role.

Former Super Eagles coach Christian Chukwu has told Stephen Keshi not to bother trying to retain the Nigerian national team coaching role.

Keshi
This comes as a former Nigerian captain, Joseph Yobo has described Eagles failure to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations kicking off next month, under the
stewardship of Keshi, as a bad development.
Keshi, who won the African Cup of Nations as both a player and a coach, was axed during Nigeria’s 2015 AFCON qualifying campaign. He was subsequently recalled, but was unable to steer his country to a place in Equatorial Guinea.
The former Togo and Mali coach is currently waiting for NFF to give him a new contract, but former coach Chukwu has advised him to seek new pastures rather than to wait around for the Nigerian Football Federation to come to a decision.
“Well, my candid advice to Keshi, you know with all this problems in the NFF, it will take a long time for the association to sit and start deciding anything about the technical crew, I think if he has a better offer anywhere he is free to go and his contract will be respected more outside the country because I am talking out of experience,” Chukwu was reported as saying by Megasport.
Speaking for the first time since the tragedy in Uyo, Yobo said he was pained that the reigning African champions would not be defending their trophy in Equatorial Guinea.
Yobo noted that he expected the coaches to have used younger and talented players to prosecute the AFCON qualifiers but wondered what went wrong with the team
“It is quite disappointing that the team will not be at the Nations Cup. It is disappointing for the country as a whole. It is bad thing. But we have to recover from this quickly.
“I spent about 13 years with the national team and I don’t think it is a matter of if I was there that this could have happened or it couldn’t have happened. But I left the scene for younger players to have the chance to play at the biggest level because I also started while I was a young player,” he told journalists in Abuja, while watching the training session of Nigeria’s U-23 team being coached by Samson Siasia.

Jonathan will perform better in second term — Eke, DESOPADEC Commissioner

Reverend Chukwudi Eke is the Commissioner representing Ndokwa ethnic nationality on the Board of Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission, DESOPADEC and also   the leader of Integrity for Leadership and Sustainable Empowerment Initiative, based in Asaba, the Delta State capital, with member drawn across the states if the federation.
In this interview, he spoke on DESOPADEC, Boko Haram, President Goodluck Jonathan second term bid.
Excerpts
There appears to be no end to insinuations that the 2015 general elections are likely to be shifted forward. What is your view?
I do not see a reason to postpone the general elections. What are the reasons being giving? I do not think there should be need for it except in areas where the state of emergency could affect the elections until peace prevails. Unless, in one or two states where we have continuous violence and destruction of lives and properties. Other than that, I don’t see any reason why the general elections should be postponed by Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
What is you take on President Goodluck Jonathan second term bid judging from his official declaration   and subsequent endorsement to seek re-election in 2015?

Chukwudi Eke
If you have watched the performance on the screen during the declaration it was a mammoth crowd. People from all works of life were there. You can imagine even cripples struggling to come into the arena, also the Fulani herdsman came out massively, women from all works of life. In fact, it was amazing the kind of crowd that was attracted that very day. Non-Governmental Organizations, NGOs, were also there and all of them sponsored themselves as government did not spend a dime. You see they spent their money because there was need for them to make sacrifice for a good leadership to continue. I know of so many NGOs that came there with hired buses, lodged into hotels and paid just to make sure they were part of history. It was an epoch making event. It was very successful , the weather was so beautiful , in fact I give God the glory because you can see that the hands of God is upon the President , for him to do more for the nation.
The body languages of the President’s close aides have been clear that he would seek re-election. Was such elaborate ceremony necessary?
Well, it was necessary because what is worth doing is what doing well. We know for every event in history there are activities surrounding it. There are formalities so to fulfill all righteousness, Jesus Christ will always say, He knows His father answers Him, yet He knows many things that He tells us to fulfill all righteousness to let the world also see how many are for Him and how many are against Him. It was a symbolic event and there was need for him to do it. The body language you are talking is not only from his aides, but from Nigerians.
Almost every Nigerian was glamouring for him to declare his intention, even among children. The body language is not only restricted to the aides but to many Nigerians who want good thing for this nation. So it was timely and necessary.
The declaration came a day after the bomb blast that killed several students in the North East part of the country, would it not have been postponed because of the incidence?
First and foremost, I want to condole with families of those who lost their loved ones in that suicide bomb attack. It was a very painful tragedy to see our children destroyed and their lives terminated innocently for a crime they never committed. For no evil they committed just because certain group of individuals who want to come to power by any means possible, coming under any guise such as Boko Haram and perpetrating these crimes and perpetrating these act of wickedness and  acts of inhumanity. Once again, I want to condole with these families and pray that the souls of these little ones will rest peacefully in the bosom of Lord. However, it is important to know that these wicked ones will stop at nothing to achieve their wickedness. Assuming if we postponed this very declaration and announced another date, I bet you given the history of this wickedness, they would still want to do something to distract governance. They would do anything possible to achieve their means, to make sure peace does not reign in our nation, to make sure there is no progress and to make sure we are not united as one. So, having condoled with the family, business must go on, because even if you postpone it, because we even have such instance in the past where government scheduled to do one thing and before you know it, there is bomb blast. When independence anniversary was scheduled some time back, before you knew it, there was a bomb blast. This has become their stock in trade and they do these to stop progress whether is in the area of governance or politics.
Governance or politics
These predators of evil are always there trying to disrupt development. So, having condoled with the families and shown our sympathy, we still needed to do what was necessary and that was what was done. The declaration was successful and even students were there, like other Nigerians who came out to make sure that a leader who has accomplished so much in the country, come back.
The PDP has already adopted the President as its sole Presidential candidate; don’t you think it impinges on other  aspirants’ right?
It is a welcome development because other aspirants have also joined the masses to adopt our visionary President Goodluck Jonathan. It was not a one man affair. To other aspirants, they think that if someone is greater and more acceptable than they are, why   should they not give him support to make sure he continues to do better than what he is already doing? They want to make sure that he finishes the job he has started because he needs another term in office to complete his transformation agenda. The administration is doing well, so we are all in support to make sure he finishes and accomplishes all the good works he has started.
What would you make out of the increase the activities of Boko Haram and botched reported ceasefire agreement?
Well, the case of ceasefire could not work because of the lapses associated with the agreement, but there is no turning back. I don’t look at failure as failure, but as a step towards success. When you look at the history of great nations you will see that nothing good comes easily.

APC National Convention: We’ll conduct transparent and credible election –Fayemi

The chairman  of the National Convention Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr Kayode Fayemi says the party is prepared to conduct a transparent and credible primary election that will lead to the emergency of its presidential candidate.
He said this during his tour of the Teslim Balogun Stadium, venue of the convention.
Commenting the procedure for voting, Fayemi said “It is a simple process. And before the election, the aspirants will have the opportunity of wooing the delegates. This we believe could assist any delegate to make their clear choice.”
He, however, said that “the mode of the primaries is a secret ballot. After the delegate complete their voting, it would be counted and the winner would be announced.”
He added that “in order to ensure free and fair election, we have provided a transparent boxes. And the delegates are statutory and elected political delegates. And we have provided banners stating where delegates from each of the state should seat. And they would be called in alphabetical order.”
On how delegates for the convention were elected, he said “the delegates were chosen from the state congresses and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT Abuja held earlier in the year. We also have statutory delegates; these were people who qualified as delegates based on the post they held in the past and present. And these, added to those who were elected to represent the 774 local governments. This is very important to the development of our party and the country.”
We’re here for positive change–Oyinlola
Also speaking, former governor of Osun State, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola said members of the APC “are here to pick a candidate that will provide positive change in the affairs of Nigeria.”

Lagos PDP Gov Primary: Obanikoro promises to fight on, says exercise a sham

One of the leading governorship contestants of the People Democratic Party, PDP in Lagos and the immediate past Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro has described as a sham the governorship primary election held in the state by his party.
Mr. Jimi Agbaje, a new-comer to the party won by 434 votes to defeat Obanikoro, who scored 346.
The former Minister who addressed his supporters and pressmen at his Ikeja office noted that the ballots should not have been counted since the number of votes cast exceeded number of accredited delegates, adding that the process of the election was compromised and predetermined. His words were tweeted via his handle, @MObanikoro
“The whole electoral exercise was a sham. We will fight it and ensure that the right thing is done
I have never seen an election were ballot papers are counted before sorting. The whole process was compromised and predetermined. As far as we are concerned, there was no election today, hence no result. No results should have been counted the moment number of votes cast exceeded number of accredited delegates,” he said.
He vowed to fight on until the necessary corrections are made while urging his supporters to be law-abiding.
“Until the necessary corrections are made, we will not rest. It is not over yet. Go home and do not take the laws into your hands. Be rest assured that we will fight this to a logical conclusion,” he added

An open letter to APC presidential delegates

I AM writing this open letter  to the 8000 delegates expected to participate in the APC convention scheduled to hold at Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere, Lagos to select their presidential flag bearer among four aspirants on December 8, 2014.
Among the four aspirants, General Muhammadu Buhari is the leading contender for the exalted position of potential president of the country. I wish to advise the delegates to the convention not to select Buhari as the APC Presidential flag bearer in view of the following scenario that will happen if the delegates makes the mistake of picking him as their presidential candidate for the May 2015 presidential election against President Jonathan.
South-South Zone/South Eastern Zone: PDP has continued to use Christian-Muslim sentiments in its propaganda campaign against the APC in those two zones, coupled with a divisive president whose stock in trade is promoting tribal and religious sentiments to gain sympathy and political support from the two zones in view of his incompetency in managing the affairs of the country.
Almost all the voters in these two zones have never voted for Buhari and will never vote for him because they consider him as religious apologist, an Islamic fundamentalist who could promote Islamic and muslim interest more than national interest once he has access to the political power as Nigerian president and nobody in this world can change the perception of the voters from these two zones. The main reason Buhari lost in the previous presidential elections in those zones is still alive if not worsened by the Boko Haram attacks on Ibos and other Christians living in the north eastern part of the country.
South Western Zone: It is most likely Asiwaju Bola Tinubu would intimidate the South West delegates to support General Buhari against their interest. Tinubu does not have the grass root support like Awolowo, he doesn’t have that capacity and mass appeal to make Yoruba vote for Buhari. PDP would definitely exploit the political rivalry between the far north and the south west that existed right from the first republic and already two states are with PDP almost all the Yoruba christians and other Nigerian nationalities residing in the south west may not vote for APC if it fills Buhari as presidential candidate.
Like it was difficult selling Awolowo outside the Yoruba land especially to the Northerners and Easterners Buhari also is unsaleable in the South West. Religious and regional sentiments will dominate the Nigerian Political landscape in 2015 not ideology or manifestos. If APC fields Buhari, the party will lose the 2015 presidential election in the South West like it happened in 2003,2007 and 2011 because Tinubu cannot market him in the zone.
North Central Zone: PDP would continue to drum to the many Christian minority tribes that APC is a muslim party and the party is the sponsor of Boko Haram. The truth is that 2015 is the APC’s best chance of getting into power in view of the apparent incompetence and failure of Jonathan administration in all spheres of the economy.
If the delegates vote Buhari as presidential candidate on Wednesday, December 9, 2015, it will show that the party is unserious in the eye of southerners and Nigerian christians who are a very important component of the country. APC delegates should not fall into the hands of PDP and president sentimental and divisive politics by electing Gen. Buhari as their candidate.
The international crisis group a worldwide political think tank has issued a statement on Friday 22nd November confirming that competing for the presidency between Northern and Niger Delta politicians and along religious lines is leading the country into a serious crisis, the same prediction was made by a highly respected Islamic scholar Sheik Ahmad Abubakar Mahmud Gummi (probably after he did istihara).
The renowned Islamic cleric advised Gen Mohammadu Buhari not to contest for presidency due to the apparent political crisis that would cause the country but for his selfish and self-centered personal interest and arrogance he refused to listen to the word of wisdoms.
In the final note, I wish to appeal to the 8000 presidential delegates to kindly be more patriotic and nationalistic by voting for less controversial candidate with little political and religious baggage a candidate that is less controversial, less divisive that would command nationwide support cutting across religious and tribal divide, you please in the name of God ignored the directive of your political god fathers and APC big wigs and vote for the survival of Nigeria and the interest of your children and grand, great grandchildren by voting with a clear conscience.
If you ignore this advice by voting Buhari in view of the apparent catastrophy that your action will cause the country next year posterity and history will never forgive you and APC will not have another chance to salvage the country from the hands of Ijaw extremist that are running the country currently.
Yusuf Aliyu writes from Unguwarsarki, Kaduna.

Mali frees UN peacekeepers from Ebola quarantine

A group of United Nations peacekeepers trapped in a clinic in Mali when it was quarantined after an outbreak of Ebola have been allowed to leave, the UN said Saturday.
Around 20 soldiers from the mission, known as MINUSMA, had been admitted to the Pasteur Clinic in the capital Bamako with various injuries connected to their service in restive northern Mali.
They were locked into the clinic with other patients and staff three weeks ago when a nurse was found to have died after contracting Ebola from a Muslim cleric who had travelled from Guinea to seek treatment.
“Having all been placed under observation, the quarantined MINUSMA soldiers showed no symptoms of the disease so they just left the establishment,” the mission’s spokesman Olivier Salgado said in a statement.
No other person quarantined at the clinic is reported to be showing symptoms.
Seven people have died in the west African nation, with the first fatality a two-year-old girl brought from neighbouring Guinea to stay with relatives.
Three days after the girl died, an Islamic cleric, also from Guinea, perished in the capital Bamako, transmitting the virus, directly or indirectly, to at least five people, all of whom have now also died.
Mali’s health ministry said on Wednesday that two new cases had surfaced — the 23-year-old fiancee of the nurse who attended to the imam and a 27-year-old man who had lost his mother and half-brother to Ebola.
The World Health Organization said in its latest update that as of December 2, 219 of 227 current contacts linked with the outbreak in Bamako were under observation.
Ebola has killed more than 6,000 people and infected around 17,000, almost all in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

Obama condemns ‘barbaric murder’ of journalist in Yemen

President Barack Obama on Saturday condemned the murder of US journalist Luke Somers who was killed in Yemen during a failed raid aimed at freeing him from his Al-Qaeda kidnappers.
“The United States strongly condemns the barbaric murder of Luke Somers at the hands of Al-Qaeda terrorists during a rescue operation,” Obama said in a statement. “I offer my deepest condolences to Luke’s family and to his loved ones.”
Obama also offered support to the family of another hostage, identified as South African Pierre Korkie, who was killed alongside Somers a day before he was due to be freed after more than a year in captivity, according to a charity negotiating his release.
“I also offer my thoughts and prayers to the family of a non-US citizen hostage who was also murdered by these terrorists during the rescue operation. Their despair and sorrow at this time are beyond words,” Obama said.
Somers appeared in a video this week saying his life was in imminent danger and appealing for help, while his captors also released a video threatening to kill the 33-year-old British-born US citizen, who has been held captive for more than a year.
Obama said the captives’ deaths would not deter his government’s attempts to secure American hostages and fight its enemies.
“The United States will spare no effort to use all of its military, intelligence, and diplomatic capabilities to bring Americans home safely, wherever they are located.
“Terrorists who seek to harm our citizens will feel the long arm of American justice,” Obama vowed.
The White House said the rescue operation had been carried out in cooperation with the Yemeni government, which is a key US ally in the fight against Al-Qaeda, allowing Washington to conduct a longstanding drone war against the group on its territory.

REVEALED: What OBJ actually told PDP governors

DISCOMFORTING news for President Goodluck Jonathan’s re-election bid broke out from former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s Hilltop Mansion, Abeokuta, yesterday evening, indicating that the outcome of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, governors who had gone there to plead for the President’s support was initially played down.
We can authoritatively disclose today that Obasanjo flatly refused to support Jonathan although Obasanjo had publicly said that he only explained to the governors his position on national issues.

From Left Governor of Bauchi State, Ishaya Aguda, Godwin Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State former President of Nigeria Chief Olusegun Obansajo, Muhazu Aliu Babagida of Niger State, Sule Lamido of Jigawa State and Liwel Imoke of Cross River State during the visit to Chief Olusegun Obasanjo at his Hill Top Resident GRA Ibara, Abeokuta on the 4th December, 2014. PHOTO WUMI AKINOLA
But we gathered that it was more than that as he maintained his stand against Jonathan’s style of administration which didn’t deserve his support.
This was even as Jonathan and the son of the late former Head of State, Mohammed Abacha met behind closed doors at the Presidential Villa yesterday, apparently to strategise on how to secure victory for him and the party in Kano and other States..
The PDP is presenting the junior Abacha, who was freed from corruption and theft charges by the Federal Government last June, as its governorship candidate for Kano, apparently based on his assumed influence and popularity to dislodge the All Progressives Congress, APC, candidate backed by out-going Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
However, the five governors; Mallam Isa Yuguda of Bauchi, Babangida Aliyu (Niger), Sule Lamido (Jigawa), Liyel Imoke (Cross River) and Godswill Akpabio- (Akwa Ibom) had approached Obasanjo on behalf of Jonathan and the PDP and pleading with him to not only tone down his verbal attacks on the president and his administration but back him in the forthcoming election.
The governors, who spent at least three hours discussing with Obasanjo, however were said to have left his mansion without any strong promise from the former president, who sounded rather defiant, claiming that it was clear to all Nigerians that Nigerian under Jonathan was in a bad shape.
Obasanjo was, however, said to have given his visitors some words of consolation, saying, ‘the situation in Nigeria today is bad but is not beyond redemption’. “That means that something can still be done to change it, if there is courage and determination to do so.”
A source close to the Abeokuta meeting told Saturday Vanguard that Obasanjo accepted to receive the five governors because of his respect for them as individuals and politicians who rode to national limelight through his instrumentality and not because of Jonathan or PDP. The source told our correspondent on Friday that although Obasanjo was disappointed by the action of most of the governors who visited him, he did not want to vent his anger and disappointment by turning down their request to visit him.
The source, who is close to Obasanjo said: “But the truth of the matter is that ‘Baba’ did not give them any promise of word of comfort throughout their stay in Abeokuta because he is very upset with most of them, who have betrayed him in many ways since he helped them to clinch power in 2007.
“He told them the truth as it is that Jonathan’s leadership had really hurt the image of Nigeria at home and abroad and that they themselves should help him to change course so as to help Nigeria and Nigerians out the doldrums.
“Obasanjo made it clear to the visitors that he was not just speaking out for the sake of bringing Jonathan or his government down but to draw his attention to the urgent need to rise up and fight the monsters of insecurity and monumental corruption that are fast eating away the fabric of the nationhood and making Nigeria a mockery before the international community.
Asked if Obasanjo had tabled any demand as a condition for backing Jonathan in next year’s presidential poll, the source hinted that the former head of state did not give any condition and was not keen on any since he was not ready to back down on his position.
“Look, let me tell you the truth; Baba stands on his position concerning Jonathan and his administration and he is not ready to change whatever he had said or written no matter who comes to him or not.
“I can tell you that if the mission of the five governors was successful, one of them, who likes to talk at every event, would have been the first to speak. What happened was more of a mission not accomplished to say the truth,” the source said.
A source close to the Presidency said that the visit by the five governors to Obasanjo might have been sanctioned by the Villa as a means of staving off lingering criticism of President Jonathan by Obasanjo ahead of the crucial presidential poll fixed for the first quarter of next year.
Obasanjo had last month described Jonathan’s performance so far as ‘below average,’ a rating that received an instant bashing from Jonathan’s aides, who descended heavily on the former leader, calling him names.
Meanwhile, although the details of the discussions between Jonathan and Mohammed Abacha were not made public, Abacha told State House correspondents shortly after emerging from the parley with the president that he was confident the PDP would ‘recover Kano’ from the APC.
According to him, Kano was stolen from PDP and the party is on its way to recovering the stolen ticket. Abacha was also optimistic he would emerge the party’s gubernatorial flag bearer, saying, “We are hopeful; I wouldn’t want to say too much. I said it before that it was a PDP state; it was a PDP ticket. It was taken or converted or even stolen; whatever you want to call it, so be it. The chances of the PDP are still bright.’’
Speculations had been rife that the Presidency deliberately withdrew the charges bordering on the alleged stealing of N446 billion preferred against the aspirant last June in order to pave the way for him to contest the Kano governorship election.
The government through the Attorney General of the Federation, Mr. Mohammed Adoke, had justified the nolle proseque (don’t prosecute or discontinue prosecution) entered in favour of Abacha, claiming that it was done in the overall interest of the country and not for pecuniary or political reasons.

Chelsea eye new record

Jose Mourinho described Chelsea’s season as perfect during the week and it is hard to argue with his review. The Blues travel north to Newcastle having equalled a club record of 23 games unbeaten in all competitions on Wednesday and will break new ground should they avoid defeat at St James’ Park.

Mourinho would love nothing more than to equal his old foe Arsene Wenger’s achievement of going through a whole Premier League campaign undefeated, though he will be wary of his poor record on Tyneside.

In four previous trips to St James’ Park in the Premier League, he has never tasted victory (D2 L2). A first win at the ground on Saturday will have Chelsea fans dreaming of reaching May with an unblemished record.

FG loses 25 health workers to insurgency

The Federal Government has lost over 25 health workers, mostly poliomyelitis vaccinators, to the Boko Haram Islamic sect and other forms of insurgency since the beginning of this year, Executive Director of National Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr. Ado Muhammad, has stated.

The government has also signed a $14 million US project steering committee for the  scaling up access to zinc and Oral Rehydration Salts to accelerate treatment of diarrhea in children under 5 years in five states of Bauchi, Cross River, Kaduna, Katsina and Niger.

Muhammad, in an interview with The Punch in Abuja, during the inauguration of the PSC with the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development in Canada, however expressed optimism that the death of health workers will not stop government from providing healthcare services in the North East.

He said, “In the North East, as I have always said, simply because of insecurity, insurgency and access problem doesn’t mean healthcare services will not be provided. This is a responsible government and as a very responsible government, irrespective of wherever Nigerians may be, we will strive to ensure that we reach them.

“In recent times, this year (2014) alone, we must have lost more than 25 health workers. We are committed to saving lives and will continue to make sacrifice. I want to say that we have lost quite a number of health workers in these locations (North East); for us we must see that as a sacrifice and continue to save lives in Nigeria.”

He said the choice of the five states was premised on the the high burden of diarrhea among children under five.

“The burden is high in these states for a number of reasons; we have some challenges in terms of awareness, we have challenges in terms of appropriate treatment, we also have challenges in terms of health system. There is no single factor that is countable but a combination of factors. This program is set to tackle these problems and we believe that with these states accounting for 30 percent of diarrhea disease in this country, simple intervention will reduce it by 90 per cent and save more lives,” Muhammad stated.

The NPHCDA ED said the project would run for the next three years and would  work with states to institutionalize the use of zinc and ORS in every primary institution in the country.

Gunmen attack Ekiti prison, kill warder, 20 dogs

At least one prison official was feared killed with over 20 sniffer dogs dead on Sunday night when some gunmen stormed the Federal Prison, on Afao-Ekiti road in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State.

The Comptroller of Prison, Mr. Kehinde Fadipe, who confirmed the attack, said the gunmen were not Boko Haram members.

Sources said the gunmen numbering about 60 stormed the prison in Hilux trucks with dangerous weapons, including cudgels, cutlasses, AK 47 rifles and charms.

Another source said the attackers were chanting ‘Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar’ (God is the greatest) during the attack on the prison, where some inmates were set free.

It was learnt that as soon as the gunmen arrived the prison, they detonated a bomb after which they engaged in sporadic shootings that lasted for more than 30 minutes.

There were also insinuations that the attack was staged to set free a murder suspect, Mr. Adeniyi Adedipe, who is facing criminal charges over the murder of a former state chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Chief Omolafe Aderiye.

Adedipe was a former coordinator of the Oodua Peoples Congress in the state.

As of the time of filing the report, journalists were not allowed into the premises of the prison.

There were blood stains on the road leading to the prison.

Another source said a top official of the state Prisons Command, who was rushing to the scene to see what was happening, was shot dead.

As journalists were waiting for briefing, one of the prisoners that escaped walked in, saying he ran out when he heard sporadic shooting at night but had to come back.

Fadipe, who confirmed the attack to journalists on Monday, denied that any life was lost during the attack.

He said he was not aware of the shooting of any of the officials of the state command.

He said, “We are moving around to assess the situation. It was not a jail-break but an attack on the prison. The main entrance of the prison was broken.

“What happened is that we were attacked from outside not from within. They came with different weapons. They attacked our men on duty and we have been here since 10.30pm yesterday (Sunday).”

The comptroller said his men were already out to re-arrest inmates that escaped during the attack, although he did not give figures.

He however dispelled the insinuation that the Boko Haram insurgents were responsible for the attack.

He wondered how the group could have attacked the Prisons when none of its members was in the prison custody.

Fadipe also faulted the thinking that members of the OPC might have been responsible for the attack.

He confirmed that Adedipe, a.k.a ‘Apase’, was still in their custody.

As of the time of filing this report, fully armed security men have intensified surveillance around the prison and all adjourning roads.

Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress has called on the police in the state to build a strong security around the prison, saying the Peoples Democratic Party may be planning to attack the facility with a view to killing the suspect and other inmates.

The Publicity Secretary of the party, Chief Taiwo Olatubosun, who spoke on the telephone with journalists, denied any link with the attack. He described it as another ploy by the PDP to tarnish the image of the APC in Ekiti State.

He said, “What shall we gain for doing that, we cannot do such a thing. It is not in our character to do such things.

“Very soon, the PDP and the governor will have to accuse God for running a clueless government and for their shortcoming.”

Olatubosun said the government was talking from the “figment of its imagination”, asking “is it the APC that is in charge of the prison or the security of the state? It is the figment of their imagination that the APC is connected with the breaking of the prison. We don’t know anything about it.”
