The Lagos State Water Corporation on Friday urged the residents to expect more water supply in 2015.
The corporation’s Managing Director, Mr Shoya Holloway, told journalists that the supply would come from the ongoing phased expansion on the 13 micro waterworks across the state.
Holloway said that work on the Phase II project of the Adiyan Water Works had started and would produce 70 million gallons per day.
“We want to improve service delivery this year and we are delighted to say that we have connected Oworonsoki community of one million people to Adiyan Phase II line,” he said.
According to Holloway, when the Adiyan Phase II is completed, the corporation will connect residents in the Badagry corridor and the Odo-Mallam water scheme in Epe.
He said the corporation currently supplies water to 20 million residents across the state with over 210 million gallons per day.
“This is not enough because the corporation requires about 540 million gallons per day to effectively service the people.
“This is why the state government has begun massive expansion of water infrastructure to meet the demand,” Holloway said.
Holloway stressed that the corporation had partnered with the private sector to achieve the projects it had embarked upon because the project was capital intensive.
Commenting on the metering of all residents connected to the public water supply, Holloway said that metering was a process that would take some time.
He reiterated that metering would help the corporation recover its costs and generate revenue.
Holloway, however, added that the corporation had installed water prepaid meters in Ikeja and Lekki parts of Lagos.
“We have about 4,000 meters already installed in these parts,” he said.
The managing director said that the corporation was working towards increasing its water supply to 745 million gallons per day by 2020.
According to him, about 2.9 million properties would have been connected by that year.
He said that the project, which would cost 3.5 billion dollars (about N58 billion), would see Lagos State as the third largest mega city in the world
