UNILAG students protests infestation of bedbugs
Students from Nigeria’s prestigious University of Lagos have staged massive demonstrations in the institution to protest against nagging infestation of bedbugs.
The students shut down the institution’s main gates, hanging some of the infested mattresses on the fences and gates.
The students say that the infestation has become so bad to the extent of not being able to sleep in their hostels.
They urged the school’s administration to take immediate action to ensure the institution is rid of the blood-thirsty bugs.

Resign before it is too late; NLC,TUC tells Saraki
Members of the Nigerian Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress, have asked the President of the Senate, Senator Bukola Saraki, to resign from his position as the senate president pending the outcome of his case at the Code of Conduct Tribunal. They said that even though Saraki is still on trial and has not been found guilty of the allegations against him, it is morally right for him to resign his job. President of the TUC, Mr. Bobboi Bala, in an interview with Sunday Punch on Saturday, said Saraki has a moral burden to resign. He said, “Resignation is a moral burden on people. But if somebody feels that he will carry his cross, go to the courts and try to exonerate himself, he should be given the opportunity. But it would be too bad if at the end of the day, he is found guilty. It does not speak well of public office holders. “In other countries, as soon as such things happen, people tender their letters of resignation. Obviously, it is a moral burden on him. We hope all politicians will begin to know that no matter how highly placed they are, one day, they will definitely have to account for their stewardship.” Several chapters of the NLC and the TUC across the states also asked for Saraki’s resignation on Saturday. He said: “As it were, the Senate President is sitting on a delicate seat. If it were a civilised society, he would have stepped aside to allow for a fair trial, so that he won’t allow his official position to influence the decision of the tribunal.” Also, the Ekiti State Chairman of the NLC, Mr. Raymond Adesanmi, advised Saraki to step down from office. He said, “If it were in other climes, he would have resigned. My advice for him would be to step down as the Senate President to answer the charges against him. If at the end of the day he is not found guilty, he could return to his position.” Second Republic Governor of old Kaduna State and Chairman of the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties, Mr. Balarabe Musa, on Saturday, also urged Saraki to step down as Senate President as a show of respect for his office. Musa said, “First of all, it depends on his conscience. If he knows that the allegations against him have anything bordering on genuineness and if he knows that he has not done anything above board, he should succumb to his conscience. “In honour of the institution he represents, it is therefore best for him to resign in order not to undermine the position of the judge. “If he knows that there are elements of truth in the allegations against him, he should not cost the government so much in court and thereby undermine the integrity of the bench; he should just resign. He is still young; he still has a lot of opportunities.”

Pope Francis asserts 'right of the environment' in speech to UN
Pope Francisasserted that the environment – as well as humanity – has rights, in a dramatic rethinking of the relationship between people and the Earth at the United Nations on Friday. Pope Francis in New York: pontiff addresses UN and visits 9/11 memorial – live updates Francis told the UN general assembly that the environment should enjoy the same rights and protections as humanity. “It must be stated that a true ‘right of the environment’ does exist,” Francis said. The declaration gives nature far greater primacy in Catholic church thinking than before, deepening the traditional responsibility of humans to serve as stewards of the environment. The justification, the pope said, was clear: humanity and nature were so interconnected that threats to the environment inevitably rebounded, diminishing the rights and living conditions of the most vulnerable in society. “Any harm done to the environment, therefore is harm done to humanity,” the pope concluded. It was the first time Francis had explicitly said that the environment had a “right” that equated it to humanity. In his 180-page encyclical on the environment, released in July, which laid out his thinking on the environment and humanity’s duty to it, Francis talked about the rights of individuals, the poor, and of future generations, but not of the Earth itself. The pope’s address, on the second leg of his visit to the US, was delivered as the United Nationsprepares to adopt 17 sustainable development goals. Those goals, while not explicitly rooted in environmental protection – were intended to promote less harmful forms of economic development. “The misuse and destruction of the environment are also accompanied by a relentless process of exclusion,” Francis told the UN. “A selfish and boundless thirst for power and material prosperity leads both to the misuse of available natural resources and to the exclusion of the weak and disadvantaged, either because they are differently abled (handicapped), or because they lack adequate information and technical expertise, or are incapable of decisive political action,” he said. The pope’s encyclical on the environment called on the world’s rich nations to begin paying their “grave social debt” to the poor and take concrete steps on climate change. As the encyclical made evident, the pope believes that the unrestrained capitalism of the current economic order is trampling upon the rights of the poor and the week, and destroying the environment. Unrestrained capitalism encouraged what he called a “culture of waste” in which the poorest and weakest were seen as disposable. But Francis went even further in his speech to the UN on Friday by expanding the notion of protection from humanity to nature. Such a change in thinking – backed up by action – was crucial to protect the rights of humanity and nature, the pope told world leaders. Sacrifice the environment, and wrongs against the weak and the poor were bound to follow, he said. “Economic and social exclusion is a complete denial of human fraternity and a grave offense against human rights and the environment,” he said. Francis returned to the theme with a warning that the large-scale destruction of biodiversity could “threaten the very existence of the human species”. Francis was careful to quote his predecessor, Pope Benedict, saying: “Man does not create himself. He is spirit and will, but also nature.” But in his choice of phrasing, the pope may have opened up a theological debate over whether his views represent a break from his predecessors, or whether they were consistent with previous strong statements about the need to protect the environment. Some experts believe that Francis’s encyclical already went far beyond Benedict’s view of the environment, which he saw – according to Professor Clive Hamilton – “as essential to God’s plan for humanity”. When Benedict spoke of the need to protect the environment, it was because the effects of its degradation were so damaging to humanity, and that exploitation of the Earth could inspire people to exploit one another. Francis, in contrast appears to be saying that the environment is more than a necessary tool for survival. It is, in fact, one with humanity, and therefore in possession of a right. At the conclusion of his 40-minute speech, he said: “This common home of all men and women must also be built on the understanding of a certain sacredness of created nature.”

No need to sell a kidney! Sperm banks offers College graduates money to buy IPhone 6 in exchange for sperm
Many Chinese have joked about selling their
kidneys for Apple products but it seems there is a
better and less riskier alternative. A sperm bank in
Shanghai, China is inviting qualified college
graduates over 5’5 tall and free of disease to
donate sperm in exchange for money to buy an
iPhone 6S.
"No need to sell a kidney…Shanghai sperm bank
can make your iPhone 6S dream come true," the
ad reads."
The sperm bank ad, which is offering to pay $942
for 17 milliliters of semen, has generated massive
social media conversation. Sperm banks are
hoping the pitch, which comes ahead of the
release of the iPhone 6S on 25 September, will
help fix a shortage in donors.
The Shanghai Sperm Bank is promising 6,000
yuan for 17 millilitres of semen for those who
qualify to donate. Donors needs to be university
educated, disease-free and over 5 foot 5.
"This is going to make me really suspicious of
anyone with an iPhone 6S" said one user on
Weibo, China’s Twitter.
According to a spokesperson with the Shanghai
Sperm Bank, the campaign has worked well so
far, raising awareness and attracting potential
donors, the state news agency Xinhua reported.
A poll conducted on Sina Weibo shows that
Chinese social media users are split on the
appropriateness of the campaign with close to
20% calling it unseemly and another 27% saying
they will donate immediately. "I need the address
to Hubei Sperm Bank now please" said one user.
